My oldest son is a freshman, and I see that the school teaches what is needed to be a successful adult. The WASL scores were some of the highest in the state, for who cares about that. I have already seen great results from her taking a decisive choice in her learning and takes pride in accomplishments she has achived. I plan on being very involved in my child's education and look forward to working with her and many of her school mates and the school to establish a long term relationship with my child's growth. This school was not organized and it did not have me prepared for school. You were not given actull grades but you were graded as either a scholar highest practiconer apprentice or novice. There are not enough staff members i feel to teach proper middle school material. I learned very little at that school most time was spent on field trips or doing art projects or having a community meeting about bullys. I was way behind when i got to highschool. Melissa was Shoreline School District's Teacher of the Year last year and is amazing. So calm and organized, the kids love her and she cares for each one of them, sees the good in what they can do. 2 oldest are successful students in college and at Shorecrest. High grades, know how to study. Despite not having tons of 'busywork' in Room Nine, they adjusted well to high school. I can't say enough for the philosophy and dedication of both staff and parent community. Truly a community. Older groups can take music and do sports at middle schools. Lots of art and field trips and camps for all levels. 3 learning 'clusters' - K-2, 3-5 and 6-8. We were very pleased with the focus on how to learn and self-assessment. We experienced lack of communication with staff, insufficient staff, poor and inadequate facitliy, major concerns about curriculum in general. This program promised to do many things we did not see it doing. Academics are not at the level we have experienced in other schools. We have seen teachers and staff unable to control children who talk back, wander halls and show a lack of respect we have not seen at other schools. Qualitiy of the progams offered is poor, often due to a lack of resources and organization. Programs seemed to vary greatly and depend on the efforts and skills or desires of the parents helping teach or staff a project. The teachers are great, and the principle Wendy Borton is the best! This school focuses on the community and does a lot of hands on work. I am going into the 7th grade and have been in this Program since 1st grade. I have always felt safe and have learned skills besides academic ones such as being a good person, making friends, helping people when they're in need. The Room Nine/Journey Program has made me an all around better person. They make learning fun!”
